1. Data Protection Act
Compliance with the United Kingdom Data Protection Act 1998 underlies all of
our personal information privacy practices. We also have a set of guiding
principles which govern how we use the information that we collect about
you on this website. These principles are:
- We aim to continuously improve our website for you. We use
information about you to help us to do this.
- We give you control over the information that we hold about
you, who is allowed to see it and how it is used.
- We take all reasonable care to safeguard your information
through security policies and secure business processes.
You can see the information that you have provided to us through
the website by accessing the members menu and clicking on Amend
your Details page. You can also use this page to change or delete
this information.
2. Sharing and use of information
The over-riding principles we apply are these:
- We, and (where relevant) our credit card processing agents,
will not supply your personal data to a third party for commercial
exploitation – thus, you can rest assured that we will
not sell the lists of our Members’ email addresses to a
third party; and the only circumstances in which we will provide
any of your personal data to a third party for non-commercial
purposes are those contained in this Privacy Policy.
- Registration Information. Once a Member selects their ship/regiment/squadron
or unit, some or all of the Registration Information held for
that Member, except for the email address, will be available
at the listing for that ship/regiment/squadron or unit.
- Email addresses. We do not directly make your email address
available to anyone on any screen of the oldoppos websites. The
only legitimate way of making contact with a friend found on
the oldoppos websites is for a Full Member to enter a message,
which we will send, on the Member’s behalf. The email sent
will include the sending Full Member’s email address so
that the recipient can respond to the sender directly. This means
by sending a contact message, the sending Member is disclosing
his/her email address. Members may change their email address
at any time through the members menu amend details page. Members’ personal
notes must not include their email address.
3. Log Files
Like most standard website servers; we use and maintain the
information that we obtain from your browser on our server logs.
This information can include Internet protocol (IP) addresses,
browser type, Internet service provider ("ISP"), and
other data. We may use this information to analyze trends, administer
the Site, track user movement in the aggregate, and gather broad
demographic information for aggregate use. We may associate this
information with your Personal Information to resolve technical
issues and support security for our users.
4. Cookies
A cookie is a small piece of data that is stored in a browser-related
file on your computer's hard drive when you use the Site. Cookies
are uniquely assigned to your computer, and are read by a web server
in the domain that issued the cookie to you. Our primary use of
cookies is to improve your experience on our website. For example,
storing a cookie on your computer allows you to login without typing
the registered e-mail address and password. You have the ability
to reject cookies by leaving the "Remember Me" box blank
in the Quick Login section
5. Keeping your information secure
We know that your privacy is very important to you and that you take the security
of your information seriously.
We've implemented technology and security policies, rules and measures to protect
the personal information we have under our control, both on and off-line, from
improper access, use, alteration, destruction and loss.
6. How you can help keep your information secure
As you would expect of us, we will take all reasonable measures to ensure that
the information you provide through our website is held and managed securely.
However, there is a lot that you can do to help keep your information safe – not
just on our website, but whenever you provide information online.
Here are some simple ways you can improve the security of your
information:
Use a strong password
Read our advice on choosing a strong password. This will help you choose a
password that will be difficult for other people to guess but easy for you
to remember.
What is a strong password?
A strong password:
- Is kept private and not shared with anyone else or recorded
anywhere.
- Is not guessable by anyone or any program.
- Is easily remembered by you, so there is no need to write
it down
Keep your password private and secure
Your password is a key to your personal information and online identity. Don't
tell anyone your password or write it down. If you are concerned that somebody
else knows your password, you can change it on our website by going to the
Members menu page. We recommend that you change your password from time to
time.
7. Links to other sites
This website includes links to other sites. We make every effort to provide
links of high quality, reputable sites but we're not responsible for their
privacy practices, site content or the services they offer.
8. Credit Card information
There has been a lot of publicity about Credit Card security on the Internet
so we decided to use Worldpay plc, who operate a secure server, to process
our credit card payments. They encrypt Members’ credit or debit card
information and authorize payment directly. This means that Members’ credit
card details are never revealed to us. Worldpay plc may transfer to, process
and hold your credit card information, in countries either within or outside
the European Economic Area, in connection with performing their duties.
9. Place of processing.
The personal information held by us is held on and processed by computers situated
in the United States.
10. Data Protection Information
You can obtain further information about data protection laws by visiting the
Information Commissioner’s website at www.dataprotection.gov.uk.
You can search for our Data Protection Notification there, should you so
wish.
11. Changes to this privacy policy
We may amend this privacy policy from time to time. If we make any changes
we'll post an announcement on this website.
This privacy policy was last updated on 16th July 2003.
